According to Christianity, the Antichrist is the person who fulfills Biblical predictions of an adversary of Christ, who resembles Christ in a deceptive way. The antichrist will meet the needs of the people for a while, but will ultimately deceive them and prevent them from receiving salvation. The word ‘antichrist’ in the English language means ‘against Christ’. ‘Anti’ means against and ‘Christ’ means ‘Messiah’ or ‘anointed’.
In the New Testament of the Holy Bible, the word antichrist or antichrists is present four times in 1st and 2nd John. The word is not capitalized in the majority of English translations, including the original King James Version. 1st John talks about the presence of many antichrists in his time, and also gives a warning about the ultimate Antichrist that will come in the last days. The ‘many antichrists’ are branches of the real antichrist that is to come. John tells about these antichrists as ones that deny ‘that Jesus is the Christ’, ‘the Father and the Son’, and would ‘not confess Jesus came in the flesh. ‘Likewise, the antichrist denies the Father and the Son.
There are other names for the antichrist that are mentioned in 2 Thessalonians of the Bible, and most Biblical scholars agree on this fact. It identifies the ‘Man of Sin’ as the antichrist. Paul gives a more detailed account than John. He uses the name ‘Man of Sin’, which is translated as son of perdition or man of lawlessness, to describe what John calls the antichrist.
